Olive oil stimulates aldehydes that kill cancer cells without damaging healthy cells?

The Mediterranean diet has long been seen as the secret to a long and healthy life, according to the British media. Now, scientists may have found one of the key reasons why.

Researchers have found that extra virgin olive oil contains a substance, olive oil-stimulating aldehyde, that can kill cancer cells without damaging healthy cells.Olive oil-stimulating aldehydes rupture the lysosomes in cancer cells, which are the equivalent of the cancer cell's bin, thereby releasing the proteins that cause cancer cells to die.

After scientists applied olive oil-stimulating aldehydes to cancer cells in the lab, the cancer cells died rapidly within 30 minutes to an hour.Paul Breslin, a researcher at Rutgers University in the United States, said, "Lysosomes are isolated in cells because they are so toxic. If you break the membrane that isolates the lysosome, what's inside it penetrates the cell."However, the researchers say that olive oil-stimulated aldehydes do not harm healthy cells, they just pause the life cycle of normal cells for a while.

Professor Breslin said, "It puts healthy cells to sleep." Breslin's study was published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Oncology.

Breslin said, "A day later, the healthy cells restart their life cycle."

He added, "The lysosomes of cancer cells are larger and more active, but somehow they are more fragile than healthy cells, although we don't know exactly why."

The next step, the researchers said, is to leave the laboratory environment and prove that olive oil-stimulated aldehydes can kill cancer cells in organisms and make tumours smaller.Harvard University conducted an eight-year study of 26,000 people. The results found that consuming good fats, such as those found in olive oil, reduced the risk of cancer by 9 per cent.A study released in January showed that consuming fish, salads and olive oil, and drinking wine in moderation, was beneficial for men suffering from impotence.Researchers have found that healthy foods clean blood vessels, especially those in the penis, meaning men don't have to rely on Viagra; lifestyle changes can do the same.Other studies have also confirmed that a Mediterranean-style diet reduces the chances of developing heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and even Alzheimer's disease.
