What is the role of magnesium? The importance of magnesium to the overall health of the body (especially the brain) cannot be overstated. Magnesium is an essential mineral for hundreds of enzymatic reactions and plays a key role in memory formation and calming the nervous system. Magnesium also has excellent antioxidant and inflammation-reducing properties that benefit the brain and the entire organism. Unfortunately, even in many Western countries and regions, it is estimated that two out of three people do not reach the recommended daily intake of magnesium. Many common chronic diseases have been linked to magnesium deficiency, including disorders of glucose metabolism, osteoporosis, bronchial chronic airway problems, heart disease, dementia, lateral headaches, depression and anxiety. What are the health benefits of L-Threonate Magnesium? With a bewildering array of magnesium supplements on the market, it is not easy to find a quality product that is right for you. Elemental magnesium must be combined with another substance, such as citrate or chloride, to form a stable magnesium salt structure. The choice of the composition of the different compounds often affects the absorption and distribution of magnesium in the body. The many benefits of magnesium L-threonate 1. Memory optimisation The role of magnesium L-threonate in neuroplasticity, learning and memory depends on its interaction with the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. This receptor sits on top of the neuron, where it receives signals from afferent neurotransmitters, and then transmits the signals to the host neuron by opening up a channel that allows calcium to flood in. magnesium L-threonate acts like a gatekeeper, cutting off this channel to the receptor, and allowing calcium to enter only if it receives a sufficiently strong neural signal. This mechanism may seem counterintuitive, but it can enhance learning and memory by increasing the number of receptors and connections, reducing background noise, and preventing the signal from becoming too strong; conversely, if the signal is too strong, it may induce cell death and an inflammatory response in the brain. Given the significant effects of magnesium L-threonate on the brain, several studies have been conducted to observe the effects of this compound on memory and learning. In one of these noteworthy studies, test mice performed significantly better on long-term and short-term memory tasks after only one month of oral administration of magnesium L-threonate. Older adults are particularly susceptible to magnesium deficiency, and studies have found that this may be a possible mechanism for triggering Alzheimer's disease. For Alzheimer's disease, magnesium L-threonate has been specifically studied in a mouse model and a small pilot study in humans has been conducted. Both studies showed the potential positive effects of Mg L-Threonate in optimising cognitive tasks, with an increase in the number of neural connections following ingestion of Mg L-Threonate, as observed in mice. 2. Sedative effects Does magnesium L-threonate help optimise sleep? In addition to potentially helping with memory formation and cognition, magnesium may also have sedative and calming effects, easing anxiety and optimising sleep. The relationship between magnesium and mental health is an interactive one, whereby increased magnesium intake may help to relieve stress and anxiety, while conversely, stress may actually reduce magnesium levels in the body as it may increase the amount of magnesium released into the urine by the kidneys. It follows that magnesium supplementation may be particularly important when facing stress or feeling anxious. Another study found that mice taking magnesium L-threonate were able to overcome their fears more quickly and re-establish an anxiety-free state for a longer period of time, relative to mice that did not ingest magnesium L-threonate for repair. This mechanism appears to be similar to that of memory, in that mice that ingested magnesium L-threonate were more likely to form new associations with their thoughts and retain new information, and were also able to adapt to new reassuring environments faster than their counterparts who were given magnesium L-threonate. There are several other theories about how magnesium relieves anxiety, including the reduction of hyperexcitability signals from the brain by blocking NMDA receptors, as well as the enhancement of the activity of receptors that receive and transmit the calming signals of GABA (the brain's main blocking neurotransmitter). 3. Mood benefits While there have been no specific studies on the use of magnesium L-threonate for depression repair, several studies on other forms of magnesium have shown that magnesium L-threonate may exhibit depression-relieving effects and intensify the potency of depressant formulas when taken in conjunction with defence against depression-based formulas. Where does magnesium's possible depression-relieving effect come from? It appears to be related to its possible function in increasing serotonin production. This is evidenced by the fact that if serotonin production is limited, magnesium's effect in this regard may be subsequently reduced. Research suggests that magnesium supplementation for 12 weeks in older subjects with depression and type 2 glycometabolic disease who have low levels of magnesium may help to modulate depressive symptoms in the same way as taking depression-relieving prescriptions. 4. Improved concentration A small pilot study involving 15 adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) showed a significant optimisation of the subjects' symptoms after 12 weeks of supplementation with magnesium L-threonate. Although this study lacked a control group, the preliminary results are still noteworthy. More extensive research has been conducted on the possible effects of magnesium on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and although the forms of magnesium used in the studies varied, they all showed positive results. This shows that the potential of magnesium as a supportive therapy for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder should not be underestimated. 5. Mitigation of common pain and fibromyalgia An in-depth study showed that fibromyalgia patients who took magnesium citrate for 8 weeks experienced significant relief of their pain symptoms compared to a placebo group. In addition, all parameters of fibromyalgia may be optimised when magnesium is taken in combination with amitriptyline, a result that suggests that magnesium supplementation in conjunction with traditional restorative may offer considerable benefits to patients.
